Why does weed smell so strong?
Alright, so let’s start by understanding where the smell of weed comes from. The smell of weed is actually made up of a bunch of different compounds called terpenes (or ‘terps’) and it’s these terpenes that give different strains of weed their unique aromas and effects. Your Amnesia haze has a different terpene profile to a Gelato. Every strain of cannabis has its own unique terpene profile you can find that kind the exact detail for each strain on sites like Leafly.
When you smoke or vape weed terpenes are released into the air and that’s what creates that tell-tale smell. The same thing happens when weed is being grown.
When you smoke or vape weed, the heat from the burning or heating process causes these terpenes to evaporate and release into the air. The smoke and vapor created by this process also carries the smell with it as it spreads through the air. Similarly, when you’re growing weed, the smell comes from the plants themselves and is released into the air through a process called volatilization. Additionally, if you’re not careful with your equipment or cleaning, the smell can linger on surfaces like clothes, furniture, or even walls. The smell can also travel through ventilation systems or open windows and doors, spreading the smell to other areas. This is how the smell is produced and spreads, so it’s important to take steps to control it at the source and prevent it from spreading further. This may seem like a lot of detail but it’s important to have these kinds of things in mind if for any reason you do need to be stealthy.
How to hide the smell of weed when smoking or vaping it
Let’s assume you can’t wander off for a walk and have to stay indoors, perhaps you just don’t want the smell filling your home, or maybe you’re a paranoid uni student trying to have a secret smoke (good times), whatever the reason it will come in handy to have some quick tips in mind when you need to hide that smell.
Here are our top tips:
- Bathrooms (with windows) are best, especially with a shower. The vapour won’t stick to the tiles as much and the steam from the shower along with other smells (whatever they may be) can be a good cover
- If you’re going straight to bed opt for your bedroom unless you have an ensuite. Probably an obvious one.
- Vapes are easiest to hide, easiest to reduce the smell, and they package away with no fuss.
- Bongs and pipes are alright too.
- Joints / spliffs / blunts = a whole lot of stank
- Smell proof container. As soon as you finish take the thing you were vaping or smoking with and put it in a smell proof container. This is an important one because these things are going to give of a bit of a smell for a while. My Pax 3 and Xmax V3 Pro vapes both fit nicely in a soup container with an airtight lid exactly like this, for example.
- Inhale more deeply. The idea here is you’re taking one long draw in and then exhaling it strongly in a better direction. If you can then blow it straight out the window and keep the window open for a while. If you can’t do it out a window then you’re going to need to get a filter going. See step 6.
- Blow it through a towel or other material, using them as a filter. For better or for worse I have exhaled directly into a mattress and duvet before and it did do a decent job. This is going to help stop a whole load of that smell from spreading. Warning though if you are smoking rather than vaping then there might be a bit of stank on it. A small problem though.
- Cover under the door and any other
- Cover up the smell with another one, but be real. Let’s be honest, if I think you’re someone who enjoys a bit of weed and when I come into your room I’m violently assaulted by the aromas of air fresheners and deodorant then the secret is out. Be contextual, what kind of smell is actually believable. Maybe some candles or incense if that’s what you’re into. Bringing some hot food up before hand might help a bit and covers munchies later on.

How to hide the smell of weed when storing it
- Put it in an airtight container like a jar. This should be your minimum precaution really. Your plastic baggie isn’t doing much to help.
- Put anything that might smell in an airtight container. Seriously, things like grinders can have a pretty strong smell and give the game away even if it’s in your bag.
- Put it away somewhere people won’t think to look and that encloses it again. A sock drawer for example, or as a teen I hollowed out my own computer and that worked surprisingly well.
- Get a strain that smells less. This is a luxury not everyone has so you may not have a choice. From experience though if you ever get offered UK Cheese then you’re going to need to put the work in to hide that. You could wrap that stuff in a box five miles below the surface of the earth and you’d still smell it.
So there we have it! Now you know why weed smells so strong, why it has such a unique smell, and most importantly you’re armed with some quick tips to keep things discreet. The more secure you feel the more you’re going to chill out and enjoy that time.

One serious side note, if your use of cannabis is ever something that you find hard to stop and that sneaking around is becoming an inevitable part of daily life then it may be time to at least reflect on the relationship you have with cannabis. Other than that I hope you all enjoy yourself and found some use in this post!
